Reduce Fire Risk in your Newburgh Home
4/7/2022 (Permalink)
Keep your home safe with these tips!
The risk of a fire is scary, but there are several ways to keep your home safe. Preventing a fire is not foolproof and always successful but you can help lower the risk. Fires can create minor damages or huge ones, here are a few lifestyle changes to help prevent them both.
Lightning Rods are made to attract lightning to a contained, grounded metal avenue and prevent fires. Make sure your lightning rod(s)is in good condition and, if you do not have one installed, consider a professional to help install it on your property. Trees can also act as a lightning rod, but be careful that they are pruned and taken care of so they do not extend to your home and create bigger damage if it does catch fire.
Lights Off is another way to keep the risk of an electrical fire low. Sometimes light bulbs can create a spark or catch fire during a power surge, or burn out. Try to use LED lightning when you can, and even flip the lights off when you do not need them.
Avoid Candles is one of the biggest ways to keep fires at bay from your Newburgh home. Candles create a huge risk because they are often forgotten. Never leave a candle lit in a room you are not in, or if you are leaving your home. Better than anything keep candles out of your home and use other forms to keep your home smelling good.
SERVPRO® of Warrick, Spencer, and Dubois Counties are here to help with fire damage, but use these tips to keep your home fire and smoke-free this spring.
Odor Damage after a Fire Damage in your Newburgh Home

Odor damage in your home.
Odor lingering after a fire?
There are several reasons for lingering odors after you have fire damage. The fire damage professionals at SERVPRO® of Warrick, Spencer, and Dubois Counties are here to help educate you on why you could be having bad smells throughout your house after the fire is put out at your home. Here are a few:
- Type of Fire - The type of fire is determined by the heat and spread. Dry smoke will move fast throughout a home and destroy more structural pieces. Whereas, wet smoke is slower and smolders. Both of these types can produce different smoke types, but wet is the worst when it comes to odor.
- Material Affected - What materials burn or char throughout the property can also impact the lingering odors present in the building, which can get determined by tracking the migration of fire loss effects throughout the structure.
- Time of Exposure - A big factor is the amount of time these smoke odors sit in your home and on your contents and even structure. The conditions that exist in the property can amplify their spread and severity. The longer your home is exposed, the worse the odor becomes.

- Secure Doors, Windows, and Garage

Other Wind Fragile Areas
- Permanent impact-resistant shutters will protect your windows against heavy winds, rain, and hail.
- Entry doors should have dead bolt locks and three hinges for high wind protection.
- Impact-resistant glass is a must for all patio doors and windows.
- Check with the manufacturer of your garage door to see if bracing kits are available. They create double the protection for your home.

How to stay safe during a flood?
Floodwaters are scary enough when they happen outside of your home, but when they come into your safe haven it is even more dangerous than you imagine. Floodwaters are some of the most infested waters. The rainwater from floods runs across the pavement, landscaping, industrial plants, and more. All of these chemicals, oils, debris, dead animals and insects can all be carried into your home. This means this water is highly contaminated.

We have several pieces of equipment, like a submersible pump for deep water, truck-mounted extractors, and portable extractors to help clean up your water damage.
Between our professional equipment and trained technicians with specialized Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), you can leave to ensure your home is in good hands.
There are special cleaning procedures needed after a flood, and having the right training can help save you money, and time, and keep you safe.
Call our offices today for more information on how we can help safely remove water and debris in your flood-damaged home. Flooding can be overwhelming, so let us help!
Does your home have a slow leak?
3/29/2022 (Permalink)
Slow/Long-Term Leak
When a customer realizes that there is a slow leak in their home, they must act fast. The damage has already started and created long lasting effects. The problem with this is insurance does not always help in these situations. And, with a damage that taken place over an extended amount of time comes secondary damages.
Mold growth is one concern for secondary damages. Mold can create a variety of health concerns, damage to your property, and is tricky to pin down.
It's hard to know what you do not know. So, finding slow leaks fast is not common. But, there are a few things you can to help prevent these long term leaks from taking place the first time.
When it comes to your pipes schedule a check-up for it. Let a professional inspect your pipes to see if there are issues from the outside looking in. If your pipes look good to them, then try examining the cracks in your foundation where water can get in from flooding.
You can keep an eye on a few things in your home to see if there's changes in your water that could be a cause from a leak. Watch out for your water bill to see if it is significantly higher than usual, decreased water pressure in your home, wet spots around sinks, toilets, or tubs, warped, or discolored walls, or, a persistent mildew smell.
Keeping these tips in mind can help you from prevent slow/ long-term leaks in your home.
When was the last time you checked your water heater?

Water Heater Inspection
Water heaters can cause water damage in your home. The best way to combat these future damages is to inspect your water heater. Residents of Newburgh, Jasper, and surrounding areas, follow these tips to help prevent future water damages from your water heater.
Water Heater Inspection:
- Inspect the rod every two years, or every year once the warranty has expired. You want to be able to see if the rod needs to be replaced.
- Flush water heater tanks every six months to remove sediment by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base. You want to be safe, so make sure you first turn off the power and run hot water until it is cool.
- Call a professional, like a plumber to inspect your water heater. Once a year is desired if you can. This is one of the best ways to combat future water damages. Signs of broken valves and loose or wet joints and rust are a sign that more severe damage is coming.
No one wants a broken water heater, as they are expensive and can commit water damages that pile on financial damages. Follow these tips to save your family from costly repairs or replacement.

When was the last time you cleaned your dryer vent?

Keep your lint trap cleaned to help prevent a sudden dryer fire.
Dryer Vent Build-Up
Dryer vent fires are a leading cause of residential fires. Dryers are found in so many households, but a lot of homeowners and renters do not know how to properly care for this appliance. There are a few ways to keep these appliances managed.
1. Have a professional install your dryer: Dryers are a big appliance and should be installed by someone who is certified. Specialists have the right tools to properly install it and create safety from the beginning.
2. Follow the instructions on the dryer and your clothing: Even though your dryer is properly installed, sometimes fires can spark from not following the directions on certain materials of clothing. Read the labels that say things like "do not tumble dry, line dry, or contains flammable material."
3. Keep it clean: Every appliance is typically safer when you perform routine maintenance and clean them properly. Taking care of the vent pipe, the inspection of gas operators to void gas leaks, and an inspection of your outside vent to avoid a buildup of dirt, debris, or other materials.
Keep your home safe by keeping up with your appliances, especially your dryer.

Sewage Backup in Newburgh Home
2/21/2022 (Permalink)
Call us today for help with your biohazard and sewage cleanup needs for your home.
Did you know sewage backup is considered water damage?
There are several different categories of water damage, specifically 3. Category 3 water is when there are harmful materials in the water that is contaminated (i.e. sewage).
This customer called when they noticed a cast iron pipe had burst. There was sewage going under the home, but they were not sure how long it had been leaking.
When sewage damage occurs in a residential home, it takes a professional to clean up. This kind of damage requires Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PPE is to ensure our technicians can safely clean up the damage for the customers.
In this case, it took several hours of pumping the sewage water out to make sure the area was free of it. Category 3 water requires the removal of the materials in the home (carpet, drywall, contents) because the materials are contaminated with bacteria and other unsafe matter.
Our team is trained to handle these types of damages. If you have sewage damage, remember to leave it to the professionals; we are here to help!

Are your ducts in a row?
In addition to all of the services we offer for your commercial building, HVAC cleaning is one of the most used services. A building's air quality is associated with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC system). When owning or managing a commercial property, you want to know they are functioning and producing good air quality. There are several checks and balances you can perform visually on your HVAC system to know whether a repair professional or cleaning professional is needed.
One way you can do that is by changing the filters regularly. Experts recommend every 90 days to make sure you can check for damages, wear and tear, and other issues.
When checking your system there are several other issues you could report to your HVAC company for repair or just an inspection. Everything from rodents, odors, or rodent feces could be issues that need attention occurring in your system.
If your unit seems to not have any surface issues and it is still not running top-notch (and your bill is getting costly) a professional clean is most likely necessary.
SERVPRO® of Warrick, Spencer, and Dubois Counties is here to help when it comes to your HVAC and duct system for a clean. Call the professionals today, because we are here to help.

Commercial Insurance Coverage for your Newburgh Business
12/21/2021 (Permalink)
Commercial Insurance Coverage
When you have a commercial property there are a ton of liabilities. We want you to be prepared!
When you are applying for commercial insurance, there are several items to consider in your package. One of the major items is flood coverage. Flooding can occur in several areas. We want to make sure you can repair your building if storm damage happens to you.
What can it do for my commercial property if damages occur?
Flood insurance pays for several things, including, but not limited to:
- Foundation repair
- HVAC Systems Restoration
- Furniture
- Equipment
- Inventory/Stock
Gap Insurance
Know your flood areas -- your standard property insurance will not cover flood damage alone. Make sure to double-check your commercial policy to see what you are vulnerable to when it comes to weather events and your commercial insurance. You do not want to leave it up in the air and have a gap between your insurance and what you need to be covered after flood damages.
If you find out you are in a flood area that is likely to fall victim to a lot of water damage, it is better safe than sorry. Get the coverage, so that you are prepared if a storm hits unexpectedly.

Fire Safety Plans
Does your family have a plan?
In a matter of seconds, a small flame can become a dangerous fire. The best way to plan for what can be a disaster is to create an escape plan for your family. After creating the plan, it is best to implement this by practicing twice a year. Other ways to better your chance of surviving a fire is by ensuring you have working smoke detectors in place, building an escape plan, and then practicing the escape plan. The following are a few steps to help you develop an emergency escape plan:
- Get a drawing of the inside of your home, including if you have levels in your home. Find a variety of ways to get out of a certain room, and make sure those windows or doors could easily be opened.
- Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Store them near the window where they will be used.
- Pick an outside meeting place. Make sure the entire family knows the plan. Make sure the meeting place cannot be easily moved. Make sure to mark the meeting location on your escape plan. Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them.
If you need more information on fire escape plans, check out the Red Cross website.

Newburgh Fire Damage Clean-up

Lightning Strike Fire Damage
A few weeks ago a Newburgh home was the target during a storm for a lightning strike. The strike hit the basement light fixture and caught flame immediately. The fire began while the family was upstairs when one member went downstairs and saw the flames.
The structure of the home was damaged from the basement ceiling all the way up to the second floor. The smoke coated every inch of the home especially the basement and second floor.
Our team has handled these types of jobs for years and knows how to help customers during these times of need. The best way to efficiently work this job was to cover everything from mitigation (from the water to put out the fire) to the smoke remediation, to the reconstruction. Our team helped put this family's home back together "Like it never even happened."
Our reconstruction consulted on this job because our team was taking care of the reconstruction as well. When damages of this nature occur you want a team that is compassionate, efficient, and trustworthy with such in-depth damage.

Fire Damage --Smoke and Soot Damage
4/9/2021 (Permalink)
The Different Types of Smoke Damage
Residents of Newburgh, Jasper, Santa Claus, and surrounding local areas: when smoke or soot damage occurs there can be a variety of types. The difference between the smoke types depends on how to clean it efficiently and correctly. Here are the different types of smoke damage for your home:
Wet Smoke: Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke: Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue: Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Storm and Tornado Season
Residents of Newburgh, Jasper, Santa Clause, Morganfield, and surrounding local areas: storm season is here. In April, things take a turn and the rain clouds turn to storm clouds. There are a few ways to keep safe. One of those is by having accurate and fail-proof warnings from weather stations and alerts. Check out the three below that can work best for your family and home:
- Reviewable alerts (you can scroll through alerts and turn off the siren for alerts you do not wish to hear).
- Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) alert programming (alerts when specific counties are threatened, ensuring you only receive alerts for your county).
- Ease of programming
Keep these alerts in mind, so that your family has a plan to know when storms are coming and be updated on them while sheltering in a storm-safe place for storms.

Fire damages can occur in commercial facilities!
SERVPRO® of Warrick, Spencer, and Dubois Counties is here to help!
Fire damages can occur in a commercial facility at any time. There are a lot of moving parts and moving people, which can create chaos. With chaos can come fire damages for a variety of reasons. The best way to combat that is to know what those reasons are and work around those with your team. A few of those reasons are listed below:
Cooking
There were over 30,900 fires within the past decade, with cooking being the main part of that statistic. This is why it is so important to install fire alarms and sprinkler systems in your kitchen areas or anywhere something can be cooked.
Unintentional and Careless Behavior
Unintentional and careless behavior, better known as accidents, caused more than 10,900 fires. The best way to prevent this from happening to keep managers and crew chiefs in place that can keep an eye on what is happening in your facility. When someone is in charge and watching for accidents, they become much more preventable.
Arson
Around 9,800 of the total fires in these properties are due to arson. While these can not be prevented beforehand keeping security cameras in place that are not attached to the building can help catch whoever started the fire.
Electrical malfunction
Problems with the electricity or wiring in a building caused around 7,000 fires in the past decade.
Heating Issues
HVAC systems that had not had regular maintenance in several years served for about 6,000 commercial fires nationwide. The best solution to keep these at bay is to have regular technicians catch these problems before they arise with regular check-ups for your systems.
When any of these damages occur, know that you have SERVPRO® of Warrick, Spencer, and Dubois Counties on your side.

Fire Extinguisher Safety
2/15/2021 (Permalink)
P.A.S.S.
Fire damages can be extremely dangerous. The best way to combat a fire damage that is controlled is through a home fire extinguisher. It should be part of your safety kit in your home to have a fire extinguisher.
Using an Extinguisher Correctly
Using a fire extinguisher is simple, but it is important to do it correctly. The best way to remember how to operate a fire extinguisher correctly is through, P.A.S.S.:
- Pull the pin
- Aim at the fire's base
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep at the base until it is gone
If a fire is out of control, it is best to call your local fire department for safety concerns. Do not tackle a fire on your own that is not controlled or extinguished immediately by a fire extinguisher.
Fire Damages in Basement
2/15/2021 (Permalink)
In this home basement, the home had a fireplace that had not been adequately cleaned.
The smoke and soot buildup caused a fire. The basement walls were covered in smoke and soot. The fire place itself even had severe smoke damage. When the fire was put out they knew they needed professionals for cleaning.
We did our ice blasting technique on the fire place of the basement. It blasts the smoke and soot of places that cannot be cleaned with standard products and cleaning methods.
When we were finished with this basement, it was ready to be introduced to our reconstruction team for all the outback. The owner was thrilled with the outcome of the basement. She got to choose some upgrades, and she got to replace the fire hazards hiding out.

Our marketing representative, Tanya Pulliam.
Tanya Pulliam is the Marketing Representative for SERVPRO® of Warrick, Spencer, and Dubois Counties. She just started, but she is ready to hit the ground running! In her job, she looks forward to "meeting people, building relationships, and learning how I may be able to help them or their customers during difficult events. It’s about the people for me more than anything else." Her favorite thing is spending time with her family --that is her absolute favorite thing to do. They love the lake, outdoors, game nights, cooking, and movies.
It has been an absolutely amazing beginning to our journey in Warrick/Spencer/Dubois counties! I have enjoyed meeting every one of you and learning about your business, team, and families and cannot wait to see you each time I come by. I’m learning new things every day at SERVPRO, and would love to share fun facts I’ve come across. Fun fact #1: Did you know we do document restoration? WHAT!? It’s really cool, I know.
Here are some little things about me in case you didn’t know already when we talk – because I love to talk, a lot!
I have the most wonderful family – Wayne, Emma, Bailey, Hadley, and Everett – who keep me busy and give me so much love I could just burst. It’s crazy in our house but I couldn’t imagine it any other way. We play Pit & Peak every day at dinner where each person shares the high and low of their day. It’s a great way to stay involved in one another’s lives so I encourage all of my friends to try it at home too.
Some of our favorite things are our morning walks together, spending time at the lake, sitting around the fire pit at home or anywhere else, game nights with friends and family, and we love to cook. I love a good pun or an embarrassing story so bring them on!

Fire Damage --Try Dry Ice Blasting
8/21/2020 (Permalink)
What is Dry Ice Blasting?
Dry ice blasting is a type of blasting method that uses dry ice pellets (CO2 in solid form) as the blasting material that cleans off the char and smoke debris. The process is environmentally friendly and provides a fast and effective alternative to traditional methods of cleaning.
Typically, the technician puts on PPE before performing this task depending on the severity of the smoke and char. The ice blast can create a dirty environment once it is blasted off the wall or smoke damaged items.
Why Dry Ice Blasting?
Dry Ice Blasting has become the preferred method to remove smoke soot, vaporized synthetic resins, and char. Dry ice blasting can reduce or eliminate the musty burnt smell that results from fire and smoke damages in a home.
There is typical fire cleaning, but sometimes fire damages create a thick char and smoke damage that creates a need for a different type of cleaning.
The process can take several days or weeks to complete depending on the severity of the damages. It takes a trained technician to complete this process. We have several technicians who are trained in dry ice blasting. They know exactly what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to wear, where to start in the home, the most effective techniques and more.
When you have a fire damage, the last problem you want to have is worrying about how it is going to be cleaned. You have so many other details to be concerned about --let us handle the mess. Call SERVPRO® of Warrick, Spencer and Dubois Counties for help.
